Scout Camping App
A user-centered mobile application for planning a

trip in the great outdoors

Let's go camping

Scout is designed to provide campers with a streamlined and delightful way to find campsites and trips. It also gives them the opportunity to explore and connect with a robust community of campers.

The Opportunity

In 2020, the number of active camping households in the US was 78.8 million and is steadily rising. Despite the sheer mass of campers and seemingly unending growth, the current process of finding a campsite can be tedious. Campers utilize endless resources to accomplish this task, however, these resources are fragmented and time-consuming.

Goals

We can improve the overall camping experience by consolidating these fragmented resources and allowing users to easily find a place to camp. Campers will have the opportunity to explore these amalgamated assets and effortlessly plan their next adventure by accessing curated trips built just for them.

Discovery

I conducted interviews with a diverse group of campers to uncover their needs and preferences.

This research uncovered four key insights that drove the design.

Flexibility

Users want the control to choose how they camp.

Community

Camping is all about a shared experience, from beginning to end.

Ease

People are busy and just want to get away.

Exploration

Campers are explorers in the digital world.

Challenges & Solutions

"Easy" Feature

Early iterations of an “easy camp” feature quickly became a critical issue. Users did not know what it was, how it worked, or what that finger snapping icon meant.

As a result of user testing, the Trips section was developed and now gives users access to personalized lists of available trips with nearby activities that are based on their interests.

Navigation

Through user testing, I found that the navigation had unrecognizable icons. Participants were unable to complete objectives as easily as intended. As a solution, icon labels were added, the Trips icon was updated, and Explore was moved to the left side. During my second round of testing, users easily moved through the app.

a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations

Familiar but new

Visual design was highly influenced by a unifying theme from my research participants. All stated that they had camped as a child and this was a major contributor to why they camp today.

From concept to product

Initial ideas were visualized through hand-drawn sketches. Using the key insights as a foundation, I developed wireframe user paths. This represents the process of creating an account. Early identification of potential issues within the designs were identified by conducting user testing.
